Literacy Tutor Training

To attend this workshop for potential literacy tutors, you must pre-register by July 12 with the Adult Literacy Program, (909) 931-4212. Also highly recommended is the Tutor Orientation, July 10, at our West End Literacy League partner, Rancho Cucamonga's Archibald Library. In this workshop, volunteers learn about instructional methods and materials for adult students.

Trivia Bee raises more than $23,000 for our Literacy Program

By the end of a laughter-filled evening, the Literacy Program of the Upland Public Library raised $23,460 at its 6th annual Trivia Bee and Silent Auction. Mayor John V. Pomierski presided over the event as the Master of Ceremonies, and nine teams competed for the title of 2007 Trivia Champions. Participation by new contenders (Golden State Business Bank, The Highlanders, The Northwoods Know-it-alls, RCC Solar, and The Tutor Titans) enlivened an already raucous contest for the audience and the returning teams (The Friends of the Upland Library, Team Biane, The Soroptomisters and 1 Chick, as well as the 2006 champions, The Upland Underdogs). Many local businesses donated items for the Silent Auction, and a light supper buffet was provided through donations from Vons, Stater Bros., Spaggi’s, Molly’s Souper, Claro’s Italian Market, and Albertsons. Mayor Pomierski said, “The Trivia Bee is one of those events that make you proud to be a resident of Upland, when you see so many people come together to support the Library and the Literacy program.” Congratulations to first time players, The Highlanders, comprising Upland High School students Jay Castro, Jay Chen, David Evans, and Taylor Gilbertson, for scoring the most points (and Bee Bucks)! The monies raised will fund the Upland Library Literacy Program in Fiscal Year 2007-2008.
